Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Before I look at a resume. Before one application gets filled out. Before “skills assessment.” The first conversation is always about goals. And we repeat the goals inquiry often. Because goals change. For some people goals change quite frequently. When goals change, strategy and execution must change as well.
Effective Goal-Setting
- Goals work best when they are honest and they are our own, free from the assumptions and expectations of your school and/or your peers. Goals can be short-term, long-term, or something in between. They can be grandiose or they can be practical. Because your goals are uniquely yours, so is the journey to achieving them.
- Define your goals early and often. While there are always many paths to achieving goals, some require more time than others and the clock is always ticking (this is especially true for international students).
